this has only been happening in the last 10 days. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox 2 times. I asked Norton if they may have heard of prob...they have not. I have cleaned my hard drive of temp files and optimized the drive. Prob does not seem to extend to my other browser, Internet Explorer

Sounds like fun. It would not at all be Norton (ex-beta tester). It is a Firefox glitch that is in 1 of 2, 3 places. In the program or in your Profile or Extensions.

If want to do either : the Profile create a new one and use it and see what happens. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

Try this: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

Last resort : This the best way to uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 57.0 with a Full Version Installer https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/
