Bookmarks disappear in Firefox 56.0

more options

Bookmarks were working fine in FF 55.0.3 32 bit on a Win 10 64 system (I had recently bookmarked disabled).

Upgraded to FF 56.0 and problems started.

I could not add any new bookmarks.

I re-enabled Recently Bookmarked and new bookmarks would be added in that list (but not ALSO to the Bookmarks Menu list like they used to be).

After adding 5 or so bookmarks to the Recently Bookmarked list, the oldest ones just disappear.

Reverted to 55.0.3 and all is well again.

The only Bookmark related Add-On I have installed is "Add Bookmark Here" but I rarely use it and didn't add any of the problematic bookmarks using it.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

See also:

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

The problem could be caused by an unrelated extension. In recent months, I think both "IE Tab" and "Tab Mix Plus" have causes user interface problems, but I think updates have resolved those issues by now.

You can view, disable, and often remove extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions.

Above the list on the right is a button with a "gear" icon that has a Check for Updates command.

Any extensions that Firefox installs on its own are hidden from the list on the right side, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything nonessential or unfamiliar? If in doubt, disable.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox before the change takes effect. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?
