You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

See also:

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You may need to restore and older backup from the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore

The name of a JSON bookmarks backup file includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Could you provide a little more detail about this? In particular, do you mean:

  • Firefox's built-in bookmarks, the ones displayed on the Bookmarks Menu or Bookmarks Toolbar?
  • Yahoo bookmarks displayed as part of a My Yahoo page?

in august of last year after at&t came out with this new & improved yahoo toolbar ( that is completely worthless ) you showed me how to get back my old yahoo toolbar that has a bookmark icon, click on it all my bookmarks would drop down pick the one i wanted click on it and go. after i got my old yahoo toolbar back it worked fine for a time but after a while the bookmark icon started to not work right one day it would work the next day it would not or it worked two or three days then quit then would come back work for a bit then quit again ( very frustrating ). so i use my yahoo as my home page on firefox it has a add content feature that i used to move all my bookmarks to the home page but now my bookmarks have disappeared from there as well.

I think there are over 100 "me too" replies but I don't see anything official in the recent pages.

I hope they haven't ended this feature without sufficient warning or a way to retrieve your data.

maybe you can answer this i am using windows 7 home premium 32 bit, i can pull up a lot of the web sites ( the ones i use the most ) from history and is there a way to put a shortcut on the desktop, i tried pulled up a site from history thought i could right click get the drop down menu and click on send to desktop create shortcut but i don't now if just windows 7 or what but i don't have that feature.

Yes, you can create a desktop shortcut using drag-and-drop. For example:

  • When you have a page open, with the window sized so you can see part of the desktop, you can drag the lock icon or i-in-a-circle icon from the left end of the address bar to the desktop to create a shortcut.
  • When you have the Library window (Ctrl+Shift+h or "Show All History") open, with the window sized so you can see part of the desktop, you can drag an entry from the history list on the right side to the desktop to create a shortcut.

That's strange. What happens with other external links and shortcuts (by external I mean either in a folder or a link in another application such as Adobe Reader)? Do those work normally?

You can back up your Firefox bookmarks in two formats. This is different from your Yahoo bookmarks. The two formats are:

(1) JSON: a very compact format that is text, but not meant to be easily read by humans. This is created by the "Backup" option: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer.

(2) HTML: a traditional format that goes back to the 1990s and is easily viewed in a browser and shared among them. This is created by the "Export" option: Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks.

Yahoo used to have an export-to-HTML feature for your Yahoo Bookmarks, but I don't know if that's still available. Can you find that?

I created a bookmarklet to export the Yahoo! bookmarks from the My Yahoo page. If you want to try it out, you can install it from here:

https://www.jeffersonscher.com/res/sumomarklets.html#YBmkExport

Please see that page for information on how to install it to your Firefox Bookmarks menu or Bookmarks Toolbar.

When you click the bookmarklet, after a few moments, you should get a Save As dialog to save a yahoobookmarks.html file somewhere on your computer. This is generated purely locally by the script in the page.

After you generate and save the export file, you can add a new Yahoo Bookmarks folder to your Bookmarks menu using the Import feature. See: Import Bookmarks from an HTML file.
