This happend after I deleted cache and some settings. After clicking one of the image links I now get this foreground window with a new link to the image, along with suggestions for similar images. How to fix?

What exactly did you do?

Did you use built-in Firefox means or did you remove or edit files in the profile folder?

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache":

  • Options/Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

My Google Image results still have the classic black rectangle. (Example attached from google.com -- I can't tell which site you're using.)

Google is known to experiment on its users and often provides a feedback link ont he results page to comment. That may be difficult to find with image results because more load as you scroll down... Often clearing cookies will help escape an experiment, but sometimes you may need to use a private window or log out to escape.

When this happens, there often are threads on Google's search forum talking about how much people hate it, so if this doesn't go away, you could check there for comments.

I dont think this is Googles fault, as I tried MSIE and there it works as it should. Reinstalled FF (kept the profile), problem persist.

Your on images in the Google menu, switch to search results and search around for awhile then switch to image search and see if problem persists.

Provided you can switch back to search.

Tried all of your suggestions, none fixed it. It started when I deleted cache and all cookies. Should also have mentioned that when I click on the image on that foreground window...2 new identical windows appear. Tomorrow I may export bookmarks and delete the whole profile and reinstall.

You still didn't explain exactly what you did with this profile data.

How/where did you remove this data?

But as a counterpoint, consider that Firefox is not capable of inventing a whole new layout for a Google results page...

Anyway, I just get the usual horizontal black panel when I click a video result here: https://www.google.no/search?q=qwsa&tbm=isch

Do you use any add-ons that may do fancy things with YouTube links?

PROBLEM SOLVED. I went to the profile folder and deleted all files there, kept all subfolders. A little bit of FF configuration and re-install of addons... and everything was back to normal. This was a crude brute force action so I cant tell exactly where the problem was. But it was a quick and easy solution.
