Why does my webpage contantly keep loading filling up the history so I cannot use the "Back" button?

more options

Web pages keep loading constantly while I am reading them, therefore when I go to the "Back" button the history is full of the same webpage.

Over the years users have reported some sites that add back button history as you scroll down the page, and possibly as you scroll back up the page. I don't know why that happens, whether it's an incompatibility with Firefox or with an add-on. Do you notice a pattern of particular sites that cause this issue?

I get around this by; When I find a link I want to check out, I open it in a new tab/window. Then when I am done, I close it and am back where I started.

Same problem - back button fills up with dozens of references to the same page. Can't click 'back' to navigate. Very frustrating

If you right-click the Back button, are there so many references that you cannot skip over them back to the previous page?

Do you notice a pattern of particular sites that cause this issue? And/or can you provide a link to a page that does this?

I'm not seeing this.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

What if you disable Tracking Protection (shield icon at the left end of the address bar)? See also: What happened to Tracking Protection?.
