How can I get messages from my folders?

I just installed Thunderbird and I got all my "inbox" messages, but my "local folders" are not being saved. In the past, with older versions of Thunderbird this wasnt an issue.

How can I get my "local folders" to be saved to my PC?

Do these folders appear in web mail? Or are they still on your old computer. "Local" in this instance means physically located on the device on your desk.
