When I updated Firefox today, I can no longer use the Windows block on the bottom left to turn the system off or go to sleep. What do I do now?

Tapping on the Windows symbol at the bottom left no longer takes me to the choices offered to turn off, or go to sleep, or others. That point is where I can go to any part of my files or look up information on my computer. Since the only thing I did today that was different was to update Firefox, what do I need to do to turn off my computer without just turning it off. How can I get into my files since I can no longer get to the file manager? I don't even know how to access information about my computer without that button since it takes me to all apps. The information listed below looks right, but I'm not sure. I have a Toshiba Laptop.

Hmm, can you still see the Windows taskbar or is it being blocked by the Firefox window?

If it's blocked, first, please make sure Firefox is not in its full screen mode. The way you exit full screen varies:

  • Video fullscreen: press the Esc key, or mouse up to the top of the screen and watch for a button to slide down
  • Firefox fullscreen: press the F11 key, or mouse up to the top of the screen and either:
    • Use the "3-bar" menu button to access the Fullscreen button
    • Right-click at the very top and use the Exit Fullscreen command on the tiny menu that appears

If Firefox was not in full screen but the Taskbar is still blocked, try exiting out out of Firefox. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Does that let you access the Windows start menu?

The Windows task bar at the bottom of the screen is there but when I tap on the Windows emblem to get to the start menu, nothing happens. What is a "3-bar" menu button? There is no 3-bar menu button in the task bar on the bottom. I just tried to unmute the speakers and that did not work either. The only other items on the screen are the icons for the programs or items on the desktop. I did take the cursor to the top of the screen and ran it along the top of the screen, nothing dropped down. The F11 key did not do anything. I have a number of tiny icons of programs I use a lot in the bottom task bar. I can get to them through the tiny icons.

That menu is inside Firefox.

Since Firefox is not running, I don't think this problem was caused by Firefox.

Could you try this: press Ctrl+Alt+Del

Windows should display a screen with various choices in the center, and in the lower corner a "power button" icon similar to the one on the Start menu. Does that one let you shut down (or restart) Windows?

Your response is what I remembered to do to get off line. Thank you so much. The reason I think Firefox has something to do with not being able to use the taskbar is because the problem started as soon as I updated Firefox to version 47. On the bottom task bar I can go to the programs I use a lot, but not into the any button on the right or left ends of the bar.

Could you check the Windows Control Panel, "Uninstall a Program", to see whether anything else was installed recently? You can click the install date column heading to sort by that column.
