Thunderbird says I must compact even though I deleted 100 messages. Want to compact some folders, as long as I can access the emails in these folders at a later date, but do not want to compact all of my folders. Is this possible? How do I do this?

When you delete a message in Thunderbird, it is hidden. When you compact, the hidden messages are removed, freeing up disk space. I'm not clear why you think compacting should affect accessibility. I hope you're not using the Trash folder for storage? Some people do this and I can't see why they choose to do so.
