slowness in receiving emails, displaying screens, (today part of Inbox in no date order displayed but system frozen) etc...unworkable..please help

I have Mozilla Firebird which has been getting slower and slower, now crashes frequently, slow in receiving emails - yesterday took about 15 minutes to receive emails and crashed twice - today Inbox displays half a screen in no date order and sender only with no subject for the second half - then screen froze. I do have trouble with my broadband because of slow speeds but think something particular to Thunderbird Email is now causing more problems. I am not particularly computer savvy and have looked up some remedies but do not understand how to access information.
