Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Thanks for response, splashing around here a bit, started in Safe Mode but problem still present so conclude extensions are not the cause.

What Desktop or Window manager are you using on Ubuntu ?

Do you have this problem with any other programs?

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe web sites. Is the problem still there?

^I would say to ignore the above suggestion unless you are desperate as Fred has not used Linux.

Isn't safe mode part of diagnostics? How many issues were resolved using safe mode?

Hmm it uses the LXDE desktop. Never used it though I do use Xfce (to get away from Gnome 3) and it looks similar.

On say Gnome 2 or Xfce you can have panels so when you minimize an application it should look like a tab in panel.

Do you have LXPanel installed?

Maybe you can post on http://forum.lxde.org/ or a Ubuntu forum for help also.

FredMcD, normally it is Safe Mode in Firefox that is suggested and not OS safe mode. And yes Firefox on Linux does have Safe Mode like on Windows and Mac.

Thanks to responders. I am making some progress.

James, I do have LXPanel installed, and their website is worth checking out.
