I removed my email account from Thunderbird and lost old mail in folders. Can I recover those folders/messages?

I am running Thunderbird on my Windows 8 PC. I was having email issues so I removed my account from Thunderbird, and then re-added it. In that process, some folders I had set up in Tbird with saved messages disappeared. Is there any way to recover them? Are they lingering somewhere on my computer? Thanks for any help!
