I started getting these Authentication Requierd: moz-proxy is requesting username and password. The site says "please enter your credentials & passwords". This happens whenever I open my pc and I don't know what the cause is or how to fix it?

I started getting these Authentication Requierd: moz-proxy is requesting username and password. The site says "please enter your credentials & passwords". This happens whenever I open my pc and I don't know what the cause is or how to fix it?

I can't find any malware or add-ons that could could be causing this.

If you could help me find and fix the issue that would be appreciated.

So far I gotten proxy requests from the following

Does it occur even before Firefox starts? That would be hard to explain.

I suggest canceling those until we figure out the source.

Do you use the Firefox Private Network extension in Firefox? Or a proxy add-on like Windscribe or another one? You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. On the right side, find the "Manage Your Extensions" heading.

If there is at least one extension before the next heading -- "Recommended Extensions" -- please continue:

Then cast a critical eye over the list below that heading. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything proxy or connection related? Anything suspicious or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable (or remove). For your privacy and security, don't let mystery programs linger here.

You also can check Firefox's connection settings here:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

In the search box at the top of the page, type proxy and Firefox should filter to the "Settings" button, which you can click.

The default of "Use system proxy settings" piggybacks on your Windows/IE "LAN" setting. "Auto-detect" can lead to a flaky connection. You may want to try "No proxy".

Any difference?

The add-ons I got before I received the pop ups were Hoxx VPN, WebRTC, and Firefox Relay. Other than that I just have an ad block that hasn't caused any issues. The pop ups only occurred when I open my laptop after a few hours while Firefox is still running. If the add-ons are the issue, I'll be looking for an safer alternative.

Was Windows asleep? I wonder if the connections timed out and that generates the dialogs. You could experiment by only enabling one of those at a time each day and see what happens.
