NORMAL STD IS RECENT TO OLDEST.

NEXT SORT SHOULD GO OLDEST TO NEWEST.

Which column are you sorting on? I have just tried with date, correspondent and subject, and all sorted, in both directions.

What if you do it via the menu? View|Sort by…

Is your email shown as threaded? That can make it appear not to sort.
