Default printing if scaling down constantly-how do I set the scaling to 100% and leave it as such?

My father has Thunderbird installed as his default mail client, and when printing emails, it will scale down to say, 50% when printing. I fixed this by going to File > Print Preview and changing the scale to 100, but it does not seem to persist and will revert back to the old setting. How do I make this setting permanent?

I am guessing, but my guess is the paper and page orientation for the printer force 50% to "fit to page"

Check the printer is set to portrait mode and that paper is A4 or Letter. Depending on your locale
