Clicking on email hyperlink within messages crashes thunderbird

I Open an email message, in the body of that message is an email address (shown as a hyperlink: <mailto:mymail@xyz.com>. When I left click that link, Thunderbird either freezes or crashes. Only way to reopen Thunderbird is to open "Task Manager" and end task. Then Thunderbird will reopen.

If I right click on that same link and select "Compose message to" it opens a new email message window with that email address in the "To:" field.
