Safari (OSX 10.9.5) works.
I tried the firewall fix, but that doesn't work.
Previous Firefox version was working fine. I've tried installing version 34 twice and restarting computer.

Hi Zeppo, Thank you for your question, I understand that you are on the latest and greatest release, but after the latest update that there are not pages displaying when you try to browse in Firefox.
If there are many sites, there are some technical information you can check in the page: View site information with Page Info
Please also make sure to try to troubleshoot the graphics drivers Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
See "Creating a profile":
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
Try to disable IPv6 (check for other possible causes as well).
Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.
Under Advanced, Select Network. Look for Configure How Firefox Connects and press the Settings button. Check the settings.
Firefox is working now. Here's the story; it's weird, to me at least.
I followed the suggestion of FredMcD because it seemed the most sensible and easiest to try first.
While browsing around the about:preferences#advanced page, suddenly I got an message saying that a plug-in I had ("yoono" I think it's called; an app that can be viewed in the browser sidebar once it is installed; I forget what it does, been so long that I've used it) needed to be disabled, which I did. Firefox now works.
What is odd is that the message never popped up earlier when I tried using Firefox 34.0.5.
Bottom line: After frustration, serendipity worked. The suggestions above did not, though I am grateful for the replies.
All the related troubleshooting advice that is posted in the support area needs to include disabling plug-ins as a potential solution. This solution never appeared for my particular issue. It appeared for other issues, but not mine.
Thanks much.
