How Do I Import My Favorites From the Firefox Browser in the Old Computer Into the Firefox Browser in the New Computer?

It shouldn't be THIS difficult. With all the hackers, IT professionals, geeks, and code writers on this planet, this JUST SHOULDN'T BE THIS DIFFICULT. This inability to smoothly, and cleanly, transfer EVERY LAST, SINGLE thing from one old computer to another, just makes me crazy!

They say electronics become obsolete every 18 months, which means I really need to update my gear at least every 30-36 months, but, I've been online since 1999, and only have had 4 different computers in that time. Really, I should have bought at least 6, but, after losing all my email and Favorites after buying the 2nd computer, I just can't stand the thought of losing more and more information from one purchase to another. Favorites, email, links....it simply disappears. So, I keep the computers until they're just stupid old and obsolete.

Just recently bought a new laptop. A really nice, really beautiful, laptop.....it has a red colored lid, with a matte, silver-colored keyboard which is back-lit with lovely, blue-colored light. It's absolutely bee-oo-ti-ful...<3. Plus, it's got a lot of RAM and a fast processor. It's LOVE at First sight....<sigh>.....

However, it's going to be some time before I can fully enjoy this lovely new computer because my browser is going to take weeks of work putting it all together. I haven't discovered how to Import all my Favorites from the Firefox browser in the old laptop to the Firefox browser in the new laptop. Firefox asks me if I want to Import Favorites from IE, but not from another Firefox browser. You'd think this would be easy, but evidently NOT. And, after 18 years on the web, I have/had lots of Favorites. Some older women collect cats, I collect Favorites (well, it beats a dozen cats!).

However, every single time I get a new computer I lose dozens and dozens of my Favorites because someone can't tell me how to do this really, REALLY, important transfer function! And, we haven't EVEN gotten around to email, yet!!

I collect Favorites for a reason. There is information on that particular website which is, or will be, important to me, at one point or another, in my life. I see my computer as a RESOURCE.....it's this HUGE filing cabinet, where I can store information to my heart's content, and then, just pull it out when I want or need it. Or I SHOULD be able to do that. But, this bug-a-boo problem of moving Favorites from one computer to another just is a problem times 10.

So, to make this story even longer......let me ask the question one more time in this Forum: I transferred all the data from the old laptop to a flash drive and downloaded it all into the new laptop. But, now my Favorites are sitting in a Folder in my File Explorer and not ONE PERSON can tell me how to get these Favorites FROM the File Explorer folder into the BOOKMARKS section of my Firefox browser. YIKES!!

So, other than clicking on every LAST, SINGLE WEBSITE in this Favorites folder in File Explorer, opening it up in a browser tab, and THEN, RE-bookmarking it, what can be done? Anything??

(no offense or disrespect is intended towards any of the volunteers on this website, I'm just frustrated at how many times this problem crops up)

Well, for heaven's sake. I'm just floored. Gotta be other places where I won't be judged and demeaned for my questions. Gotta be.....

Getting a little long in the explanation don't you think. I have to sift through all that. Why did you close off the other question as solved when I guess it is not.

I can not look at that.... We are Volunteers here.

Please edit your question to a concise coherent question please.

You can use a USB stick to transfer your personal data in the Firefox profile folder from one device to another device.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

You can copy files like these with Firefox closed to the current profile folder to recover specific data. Note that you should be cautious with copying SQLite database files if you previously had problems.

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: compressed .jsonlz4 backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • cookies.sqlite for the cookies
  • formhistory.sqlite for saved form data
  • logins.json and key3.db (decryption key) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
  • cert8.db and possibly cert_override.txt for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
  • persdict.dat for words you added to the spelling checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other Site Preferences
  • sessionstore.jsonlz4 for open tabs and pinned tabs
