Since installing Firefox 5.0 I'm having a problem with Firefox partially overwritng the screen I'm currently looking at. Originally I noticed that when looking at an Outlook screen I would get parts of Firefox painted over Outlook at some point, but right now I'm having a big problem with the Firefox Downloads screen partially painting over the main Firefox screen every 30 seconds or so as I'm downloading a big file.

In the case of Outlook I have the impression that Firefox has some kind of delayed repaint feature but doesn't realize the visible screen is no longer Firefox's when it decides to repaint. It could be the same for the Downloads screen as the top bar of the screen isn't reappearing every 30 seconds, only part of the screen.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

In Firefox 4 and later Safe mode disables extensions and disables hardware acceleration.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.

I've uploaded some screen shots of the problem as JPGs.

Thanks for the help. The problem is indeed fixed by turning off hardware acceleration. I actually updated the video driver a month or two ago and I've now reverted back to the previous version. Unfortunately that version has the same problem. I'm not optimistic about the driver getting updated again as it's a 3 or 4 year old NVIDIA card, but I'll poke around and at least I can continue with the acceleration off. Thanks again.

It turns out NVIDIA put out a new driver just a couple of days ago. It has the same problem so I'll have to leave acceleration off,

Hmm, the box was from Dell so I went to Dell's web site and found a 4 year old driver that works fine with hardware acceleration on.
