If Desktop Thunderbird has been around for many years, why does it still have so many problems? I am having no end to the problems in trying to connect my to Gmail accounts effectively. This should be simple?

Software often goes through major revisions and updates that introduces bugs that no one had even thought possible at the time but yet there they are.
What are the actual problems that you are having with it?

I had so many problems that I abandoned trying to connect my Gmail accounts. I only have small email accounts connected now. They seem to work ok. Thunderberg didn't seem to cope with larger Gmail accounts at all. Problems included missing folders, errors, and slowness.
