It may be that the account isn't set up properly. This URL gives a sample approach: https://www.lifewire.com/aol-mail-in-thunderbird-1173124 as does this one: https://www.intertuto.com/en/mozilla-thunderbird-6270.htm For example, the full email id (including @aol.com) must be entered for user id.

Is this a Verizon account on *.verizon.net servers or an AOL account on *.aol.com servers? For the former, use an app password in TB instead of the regular account password.
