There are different types of search avaialble.

Quick Filter Bar: enabled: View > Toolbars > Quick Filter Bar. Best used to search on the opened folder.

Note: it would seem that choosing the 'Sender' option does not refer to stored in address book Contact First or Last name or Display name, but searches on the name was included by the sender in the header with the email address or part of the email address.

If the search returns a blank, there will be an option: 'Continue this search across all folders'

More info here:

Global Search: on the 'Mail Toolbar' Type search parameter eg: name of person you should get 3 types of options in drop down. Searches all accounts, but not any deleted emails.

1. Messages mentioning search data (note: this seems to only be offered if entering a search containing 4 or more letters ) 2.Search eg: google for search data 3.List of names and email address.

When you select an option from the drop down list, a new tab opens allowing further filtering options. You can click on 'Open email as list' link to see emails in a more conventional list.

See more info here:

Menu Bar search option. 'Edit' > 'Find' > 'Search Messages' This allows you to search on specific folders or specific accounts, including 'Deleted/Trash' folders. You can choose to include subfolders. you can choose to create specific search parameters:

'Match all of the following'

to search for one condition or to create an AND condition where it must match all conditions to be true.

'Match any of the following' to search using more than one condition where OR is used, so any of the conditions would be returned in the search.

You can also choose to save the search as a specific folder name. Plus more options.

What's changed? How has it become harder?

I haven't noticed any change since the introduction of the global search, which was quite a few versions (and a couple of years) back.

Have you just done an upgrade from a relatively old version?

Seems to have changed without an upgrade. Maybe I changed my settings by mistake. Used to be if I went to the search bar at the top of my inbox, I just entered a name and it took me to emails from that person. Now I get a choice of bing and then other boxes that have me indicating sender, subject, date, etc. Didn't used to be that complex. I've also picked up a funny little rectangular box or icon by my email, above my inbox. Space aliens? Don't mean to be flip, but that icon made be think of some weird virus. Really appreciate your help. I love Thunderbird otherwise
