Tab crash results in new profile

So, similar to this post but I haven't downgraded, only upgraded.

OS: Windows 11 (26100.8893) Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:153.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/153.0

I can load it up in the morning, load all my standard tabs, then not too long into it a tab will 'crash' and require a reload. The reload then says its a dramatic crash and the whole browser needs to restart. Soft or Hard (i.e. "Exit") restarts always then ask to create a new profile on startup. This means I lose so much configuration (settings, etc) that is not in the Account Sync, meaning huge amounts of time have been wasted setting Firefox back up again every day.

When I go to about:profiles I can see all the old and new profiles (recently cleaned up all the old ones).

I do use my FF Account across various versions of Firefox (run a linux OS that still has a 14x version - need to upgrade OS to get more recent, but its a significant upgrade that had previously failed so not high on my 'want to resolve' list) - all the Windows OS's have the latest FF.

Just to verify, by "ask to create a new profile" you mean that scary error box "This profile was last used with a newer version of this application. Please create a new profile." — so whenever your 153 crashes, it sees the last profile it actually created as being used by a newer version than 153?

And you don't have different unstable versions installed, just the public release one — and do not do any low level directory shenanigans like sharing the profile folder between devices via cloud/shared drive etc.?

One sanity check — please download a regular installer from firefox.com and run it over your setup to straighten out any mismatched versions and failed updates from the past.

Also please make sure the crash reports are sent, and share some of the recent ones here.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A list of Submitted (and Unsubmitted, if any) Crash Reports will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Submitted Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.

Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report.

(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)
