This has been an erratic problem. I send an email. It goes into the sent folder, but the email doesn't actually send. It was sending fine for a while, but has recently stopped. I test it by sending to my gmail account. I've gone to the host server and sent through that with no problems so its definitely mozilla thunderbird.

You are testing it by sending from one account to another? You won't get messages sent to yourself on Gmail, for instance.

Thunderbird really shouldn't be copying it to Sent until it has successfully transferred to the SMTP (sending) server. So maybe it is being accepted by the sending server but is being stopped further down the line. Have you or your correspondents checked Junk, Spam, Bulk Mail (etc) folders for lost messages?

The server attached to thunderbird is not a gmail account. If I go directly to the server site, the email sends and I see it on my personal gmail account. When sending through Thunderbird is when I have a problem. I've checked my settings and they appear to be correct Again, I'm not getting error messages. The emails go into the sent folder When sending it says sent successfully.
