User Manual?

J and N Larson

Hello, I hope you are doing well.

I have asked a number of questions since starting with Thunderbird for Windows 11 a few months ago.

Is there a user manual somewhere? If not, it appears many of us would need one.

Please let us know where to find it or, if there isn't one yet, please create it.

Thank you in advance!

Unfortunately, there is no published user manual. Given that it's a fast-moving, frequently updated target, that it's maintained and supported by volunteers, and that it's free, I don't think there is enough time or manpower to write such a document, not to mention keep it up-to-date.

We do have a reasonable alternative, though, an extensive collection of searchable Knowledge Base articles. Most common topics are addressed there, and, of course, there is always this help forum.

I understand. It's still unfortunate there isn't a manual! There must be thousands of questions by now, and only one of my questions has been answered so far. In fact, someone replied to one of them that they had asked a very similar question months ago and never received a reply...

A manual in a form of a PDF to download would be hard to keep updated, more so in printed book form.

The Knowledge Base is kept up to date when possible by contributors and those who work with Thunderbird in some way.

There is not, we wrote one some years ago and no one actually read it.

Try using the search on the link Lin supplied

Then restrict your search results to help articles only and Thunderbird. This returns curated support documents explaining features. Not a manual, but well researched documentation.

You can also use the display all link in each topic box to show all of the articles in the category making the link essentially the same as the table of contents in a book. With expended category heading for each chapter.

The search substitutes for having an index.

Your questions https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1610061 Lin answered this one, but these support articles cover the same ground. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/appearance-panel-layout-message-list-card-view-tab https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/message-threading-thunderbird

I wrote a response for this, I hoe it helps, but it is not something a manual could fix. Overhalpful software can not be defined in a book.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1609747 This topic was responded and to be quite honest I have given up trying to explain to Yahoo customers that Yahoo spam filtering is rubbish and you can not opt out of it. They just keep posting in these forums like we have some control over Yahoo. We do not.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1608214 I certainly would not bother with that one. IMAP is a syncronised mail protocol. Folk insist on making it into a file system and struggle when they learn it is not reliable as a mail account transfer agent. They also fail to consider that usually there have an antivirus slowing things down on both the fetch and send side until something gives (silent timeout usually) and they loose data.

There is no protocol for transferring mail to yahoo that is guaranteed. Yahoo make it that way. Google at least offer a takeout service. Yahoo missed that boat.as well. Fairly typical of them really.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1607151 I can not really help you with that one and I guess no one else can either as the issue appears to be related to file associations in your web browser and operating system, not Thunderbird. If I had to guess I would say the issue probably relates to the way localhost is defined or controlled on your individual system if that is the result after you complete the Google sign in steps. Your version of Thunderbird should be passin off to your web browser to authenticate with Google. THe URL in the image certainly indicates that the URL is being passed to the operating system. SO I think if that is all you see that your default Bropwser is not correctly set in Windows and Windows is responding that it does not know what to do with the URL that it has been passed.

Your https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1604974 is responded and answered. YOur musings here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1604974#answer-1848193 probably indicate you need less antivirus assistance. Perhaps consider using Defender rather than a paid solution.

I will stop there as I do not see anything that having a manual would really have helped you with beyond what the support article contain. Despite you thinking otherwise, there are recent changes, bugs and third party products in play for most of these issues and click here change this type instructions would not solve the issue.
