One of many ways with Windows: search in the start menu for "Thunderbird". From its sub-menu, choose "Go to file location". This will actually open up the folder where the Start Menu shortcuts live. Select the "Thunderbird" shortcut and Copy it (Ctrl+C). Now find an open area on the Desktop and Paste (Ctrl+V) it there.
