Thunderbird 31.1.2 won't let me create text link. Older versions do. Why?

When I installed Thunderbird 31.1.2, I could no longer embed web links in text. As soon as I installed an older version of Thunderbird everything worked again. I would prefer the latest version but need the feature. Using Windows XP SP3.
