How do I retrieve and archived email?

I am trying to retrieve emails I have archived, but my archive folder properties show "0 Emails" and no file size. I had them archived by years, and was trying to get into the 2013 folder I created, but it's empty. Is there some way to retrieve them? Does Thunderbird have an auto-delete function I can check/change so it won't happen again?
