I have to sell my laptop and want to clear the temporary files that firefox stores on my machine. Like IE, is there a "delete files and websites" button that I can just press?

You can erase information stored by Firefox by choosing Tools > Clear Recent Histroy... from the Menu bar. Once the dialogue window has appeared, you can choose to clear Everything.

For a for in-depth cleaning of Firefox and your PC, please consider installing CCleaner which will allow you to clear a lot of user-created filed from your PC.

Why don't you reformat your hard drive before you sell it, won't it be much safer?

Reformatting a drive won't erase files either.
You need to wipe the drive with a special program to remove all personal data before selling a computer with the hard drive.

I pull the hard drive out and let the new owner know they need to put a new one in. Though some reformatting for them is involved you could be certain your info is not exposed.
