back and forward arrows don't work

The back and forward arrows appear but are in grey and cannot be activated. A right click will produce the drop down menu of pages viewed but without using the drop down menu I cannot simply go back one page or forward one page by pressing the appropriate buttom

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
