Can you suggest any functions or apps that I must or should avoid? It's important that I NOT use a VPN, and that I use 'open-source' in a probably 'shared access' situation. GRM PL

Hi, you flagged this as a Sync question, but I'm not sure if you actually have a question about Sync since you do not want to use it (and you don't have to).

What do you mean by "shared access"? Do you want to learn about creating separate Firefox profiles for each user of your computer? If you each sign in under your own Windows account, that separation happens automatically. However, if you share a single Windows account, then you could create individual profiles. Don't set up Sync in these profiles, or you'll ruin the separation. This article would be a starting point on doing that: Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles.
