I am being asked for my password to open thunderbird..is this a scam ? ..if not I have forgotten my password and there is no option for me to reset it..can you help me reset my password ?

Are you referring to your primary (also known as Master) password? If so, it's not a scam. That password can be removed, but in doing so, all account passwords will be removed and will need to be reentered. You can remove the Primary Password by following these steps:

Choose Tools ->Developer Tools-> Error Console, paste the expression: openDialog("chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xhtml") and press the Evaluate button. That will open a dialog asking you if you want to reset your password.
