I've had to recover my computer because of the Windows 10 update. I have reloaded Thunderbird but my password wont work for my existing account. Can I change my password without the original and with a brand new reloaded Thunderbird ?

Thanks for any help

I presume you are talking about a mail account password.

Thunderbird uses the same password as you would use to access your webmail account. You can only setup new passwords via the webmail account. So, first check that the password you are trying to use will get you access to your webmail account. Then you know the password is ok. If you cannot get access, then use the 'forgotten password' link to get access to webmail account and reset the password. Whilst in the webmail account, check to see what type of forwarding it is set to allow/use - POP or IMAP.

If this happens to be a gmail email address and you want to use POP, then make sure the option to use 'less secure apps' is selected.

Then make sure your anti-virus/firewall program is set to allow Thunderbird.

If you are in the process of creating an 'existing mail account' and are getting a password error, but that password will give you access to the webmail account (double check it works on webmail) and nothing is blocking thunderbird. Then, the password may be good, but not for the server settings you are trying to use.

File > New > Existing mail account or Menu icon > New Message > Existing mail account

Enter name Enter full email address Enter password click on 'Continue' TB tries to locate configuration settings.

Make sure it has selected the correct type of mail account - POP or IMAP. You must use the one which has been selected in the webmail account. Click on 'Done' to create the mail account.

Please confirm: webmail:

  • You have access to webmail so password is good.
  • You have selected POP or IMAP - which one?
  • If gmail and POP, you have selected' Less secure apps' option.

Anti-virus/firewall program:

  • is set to allow Thunderbird.

Thunderbird: create the mail account - pop or imap as appropriate If pop then check all your account settings before downloading.

If you have created the mail account anyway and it's still got an issue. please post this info:

in thunderbrd Help > Troubleshooting Information click on 'copy text to clipboard' paste the info into a 'Post a Reply' text box in this question in this forum.
