Mozilla status bar indicates perpetual downloading.
Why does Mozilla status bar continually show 'Downloading 10 of 62 in Sent', or something like that? Is it related to the McAfee induced slowness?

sure sounds like McAfee.... turn off email scanning and see what happens.

I hope this is the right way to respond. I've tried reducing the McAfee interference, and it helped, but there are still delays. Also, I've been using Thunderbird on a PC without McAfee, and it's also suffered in the same way over the last few weeks. The 'Downloading ...' message in the status bar also increments slowly, although not as badly as on the (more high-powered) PC with McAfee. I don't see what the point of this downloading is since it seems to be dealing with folders of emails which I'm not accessing. I also notice that when I return to the PC after a break it takes an age for Thunderbird to become active again, and the process is accompanied by an enormous amount of disk activity.
Any way that get the message across is the right way in my book.
lets create some more disk activity.
On the kelp menu select troubleshooting information. then select the show folder button in the troubleshooting information. Close Thunderbird delete the file global-messages-db.sqlite Restart Thunderbird... it will be slow and searches will not work until that file regenerates. The size of the file you deleted should give a clue of how long in might take.
What mail provider in the account on? There have been issues with Google, with the same messages being downloaded over and over. I was of the understanding they were fixed though.
First, many thanks for taking time and trouble over this.
Looks like I'm going to be eating some humble pie. I followed your suggestion, and I got the impression of some improvement, but there were still severe delays. I then thought I'd try bypassing my wifi cable internet connection by tethering the computer to my cell phone and using the data network. There was a massive improvement, although still some pauses first in entering data in the Write window, and then in the 'Copying message to Sent folder' phase - which took about 20 seconds. Also there is still this interminable reporting of 'Downloading 77 of 60 in Sent' (the number very slowly creeps up). Sometimes it has a similar message regarding one of my other folders, but only these two, and I have about 10 others.
Anyway, I'll pursue the cable connection problem (curiously it doesn't seem to affect Firefox), but do you have any suggestions about the constant 'Downloading' signals.
For the record, I'm using a IMAP option of my Internet Service Provider here in Belgium - Telenet.
Once again, thanks for your help.
With the sent folder. Right click and select properties. What is the size on disk? Right click again and select compact Right click again and select properties. What is the size on disk?
Sent folder - size on disc 1.1GB Compacting didn't change this, but it seems rather large? However, I contacted the ISP and, whatever they did, the delays seem to have disappeared, likewise the unending reports of downloading messages in the status bar. Looks like I should reduce the size of my Sent folder. Without any conscious effort on my part a series of year-based folders have developed ('2010', '2011' etc), but not within the 'Archives' group of folders. Would it be better to archive them? I tried it on one of these folders (selecting all the entries and clicking Archive), but the Archive version says it has 709 entries whereas the original version has 1035. On the other hand, I can't find any that don't appear in both folders. I'm left puzzled.
I have the same problem and am not using McAfee and have never had on the machine. And, I've compacted all my files.edward1065 said

Whilst McAfee is a known problem child of long standing, most such errors are related to the anti virus scanning and messing up the incoming mail. Brand is not particularly important. There have been bugs particularly related to Gmail of a similar nature, but they relate to repeated download, not being stuck on a single mail.
Thanks for the suggestion Matt. I'm running Thunderbird on 2 laptops and 1 desktop and have this problem on the desktop alone. I'm also running MS Security Essentials on all 3. I have solved the appearance of the perpetual download problem. I tried restarting TBird on the desktop--no luck. Then I rebooted the desktop and Ta Da!, the downloading bar disappeared. Perhaps this will work for others also. The case is closed.
