Can't open links in Thunderbird - haven't been able to for some time

A few updates ago of Thunderbird, I noticed I could no longer open links contained in emails. I just put up with it hoping it would come right but it's time I had an answer. I use Firefox as my browser. Although there's something on the Mozilla site that looks as if it would answer this precise question, it doesn't open up, either!?
