I am running Thunderbird 45.1.1 on Windows 10. Prior to upgrading to windows 10, Thunderbird worked flawlessly on Windows 7. Now it regularly hangs (not responding) for several minutes at a time. Most often this occurs when deleting an email (probably because I do a lot of that), but it happens at other times as well. I have tried various compatibility settings without success. Interestingly, when I try to set compatibility to windows 7, Thunderbird won't respond to keyboard or mouse at all!

I have tried repairing folders, etc also without success.

Since I originally installed v38.3 and then upgraded to v45.1.1 at one stage I found both versions still listed in Programs and features, so uninstalled version 38.3 and reinstalled v45.1.1 - also with no success.

Started windows in safe mode, problem is gone regardless of whether TBird is in safe more or not.

Really not looking forward to having to Reset my PC though!

Anything else to try?

What is your anti-virus software?

Windows safe mode disables anti-virus software, which is most likely the culprit. Some general recommendations:

Create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird

Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.

Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.

Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.

Remove any add-ons your anti-virus software may have installed in Thunderbird.

Keep it working. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird
