thunderbird under win10 freqently hangs for long periods of time
when starting thunderbird for the first time each day, it will frequently hang and eventuall display a message that thunderbird is not responding.
The version instally is the most recently available version for Win10 home edition, 64-bit.
when told to restart, it generally will, but frequently hangs a second time. It will generally run the third time around,, but will randomly hang if the system has been idle for a while.
The system never sleeps, (but the display will turn off after 30 min or so) and is generally powered up at all times.
Antivirus is Windows Defender.
Computer is an HP laptop delivered with WIn 8.1 --- the WIN10 automatic install upgraded the system to win10, third quarter 2015. system has 3+GB of memory, and a "large" empty hard drive.
Thunderbird has been totally deleted and then completely reinstalled within last couple months.
all files have been compacted, and the overall drive has been checked for errors -- none were identified.
Not having problems with any other software - only thunderbird.

Try to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled. - Win10 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/change-startup-settings-in-windows-10#v1h=tab01
Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode
Does the problem go away?
Can you run a 'task manager' window when this happens and screengrab it just before or after the hang (if the exact time can't be captured) and share. Also can you confirm that there are no other error messages besides the 'Thunderbird is not responsive' ?
Event logger is good for that: Find attached some screenshots of task manager and event logger for clarification.
