I want the desktop icon specific to the page (Google, Yahoo, etc.) rather than the generic Firefox logo.

Should be simple fix, right? All my desktop icons reflect Firefox generic logo instead of the logo associated with the specific web address, you know: the Yahoo logo for Yahoo, Ebay's logo, YouTube logo, etc...How do I change the icons?

One thing you can try is; Open the browser to the page you want. Holding down the left mouse on the icon in the address bar, move it to the desktop.

If you want a different icon (favicon) then assign that icon yourself to the desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties). You can usually get the favicon if you append "favicon.ico" to the main domain of a website (e.g. http://www.mozilla.com/favicon.ico) to display the favicon in a tab and save that image to a folder or see if you can find it in "Tools > Page Info > Media".

You can also check the browser.shell.shortcutFavicons pref on the about:config page.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Browser.shell.shortcutFavicons set to boolean/true already and the icon in the address bar is also the Firefox icon. C'mon, don't the desktop icons for everyone using Firefox appear with the generic Firefox symbol? Show of hands.... I haven't done anything to change the way the icons appear, I just like seeing that fancy "Y" for Yahoo and the multicolored words spelling out "EBay" in little squares on my desktop!

No, website icons aren't shown with desktop shortcuts to a specific website. AFAIK, that is the manner in which Windows OS's work with add on web browsers. The user is able to change the icon through Windows - Properties for each shortcut, as cor-el mentioned.

more options

Changing the icon through Windows/properties by tacking on "Favicon.ico" to the web address merely gives me a small picture of the icon when I click on the shortcut, instead of the web page! So, search online for the icon image, download to my system and then, what? I'm afraid we may have reached a point where the degree of the annoyance is less than the degree of difficulty correcting.

more options

You shouldn't change the link (URL) in the properties, but double-click the icon in the Properties to change this icon. You would first have to save the favicon to a folder on your hard drive to be able to browse to the file and select it.

more options

Double clicking the icon in the properties does nothing. Can you be more specific?

Yes, there are a few icon suggestions that appear, but none are the proprietary icon specific to the web page. Let's go back. When I create desk cut or drag web address to the desktop, why doesn't it automatically show the icon specific to the web page? I am getting a pain in the neck by constantly shaking my head in wonderment and bewilderment.
