Try to start windows in safe-mode Windows safe-mode

After I start Win in Safe Mode, ... then what do I do to fix this problem?

After I had this problem, I did download all the Windows 'fixes'.

   Since FF (24) won't keep/ or hold the reset settings, should I maybe  somehow un-install this latest FF 24.  
   Then install it again?
   It seems to me that the FF -24- vers is damaged on my computer.

 It is a real time consumer to read all the fixes then they don't work!

I'm almost ready to stop using FF!

Then it is another program on the computer, you may wish to also try a clean reinstall.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Your profile files such as bookmarks, and history will not be affected.
Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
   • Windows:
     • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
     • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
   • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
   • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
   1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
   2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Make sure that you aren't using a desktop shortcut that has the -safe-mode command line switch appended to the target line in the Properties of the shortcut.

Where do I find the command line and target line of the Shortcut?

I don't know how to look for the command lines, nor amend them if they need to be.

Right Click the shortcut => Properties => Target Path (or something similar).

Where is my data safely saved? Does install automatically get it back?

I have a desk top file that says '''''Old FF Data'''''.? ... Is that MY data or the old program and my data?

I also need my usernames & passwords.

in old ff data are stored your data from your old firefox profile. To copy your data in new profile see here Recovering important data from an old profile

If you try to start Firefox normally and you see the Firefox Safe Mode window (shown below) choose the "Start in Safe Mode" option.

You can also get this window by holding down the Shirt key while double-clicking the Firefox icon.

Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables added extensions, uses the default theme, and disables hardware acceleration. If you can use Firefox in Firefox Safe Mode, try disabling hardware acceleration and then exit Firefox, as suggested in this troubleshooting article:

1. Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button (if there is no Firefox button, go to Tools -> Options).
2. Select the Advanced panel and the General tab.
3. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
4. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button and then select Exit to close Firefox.

Wait a few seconds to make sure Firefox has closed completely. Now start Firefox the way you normally do. Does Firefox now start up without seeing the "Firefox Safe Mode" window? If so, then the problem had to do with hardware acceleration. You can try updating your graphics drivers to see if that fixes it or simply run without hardware acceleration.

Once you get Firefox to start normally, you will need to reinstall your extensions, since a Firefox Reset removed them from the new profile that was created. For details on what a Firefox Reset does, see Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings. You can look through the "Old Firefox Data" folder to see what other data you might want to copy to your current profile.

I have unchecked the ... "use hardware acceleration ......" and it did not change anything. It still opens with only the two choices.

Firefox offers to restart in Safe Mode now when it detects that Firefox previously crashed at startup (bug 294260) so it would be helpful to view recent Firefox crash reports. To get them,

Start in Firefox Safe Mode and then

1. Enter about:crashes in the address bar
2. Copy the most recent submitted crash report IDs ... they'll start with bp-
3. Paste the crash report IDs to your reply here.

You can also use these instructions to get recent crash report IDs.

When I Delete the Firefox installation folder won't that delete all my settings, bookmarks, etc.?

IF I simply download the new FF (24) a second time, can't I get it to write over the first one, which will keep my settings?

I'm a bit nervous of losing things if I delete the old programs.

No, Firefox stores your personal data in the profile folder that is located elsewhere in a hidden location.

• C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

But make sure that you do not remove personal data in case you would uninstall Firefox as that will remove the Firefox profile folder(s).

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

• Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
