This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Thanks cor-el.I got rid of the add-ons and I got the back/ forward buttons back.Unfortunately my McAfee site advisor is not compatible With Firefox 4. Bugger it! I 'm going back to the old Firefox.They haven't got the 4 version sorted out properly.
