Issues with spectrum email

pennypincher

In an answer to a previous question, I learned that Spectrum email has issues. I have since learned that Spectrum is slowly phasing their email out. So I'm guessing that change is necessary for me. If I create a free Outlook account on my W11 desktop, is using Thunderbird still an option? This whole email thing is confusing for me. Thanks for any help.

Yes, you can create an Outlook account alongside the Spectrum account. Then, after doing that, it is possible to transfer all email messages from the Spectrum account to the Outlook account. Post back when you're ready to do that.

Thanks for the quick reply. Does the Thunderbird email go away?

When done, you could remove the Spectrum account, No change in thunderbird. When you are ready to leave spectrum, do this:

  1. install the addon, importexporttools NG
  2. click file>offline>download to be sure that all spectrum messages are on pc
  3. highlight each folder in spectrum account to save, one at a time, and rightclick, select the importexport option to export mbox
  4. next, highlight Local Folders, rightclick, and, one at a time, rightclick and select importexport option to import mbox
  5. after doing that, spot check to ensure all messages are in Local Folders. Once done, you can remove the spectrum account.
  6. now, all spectrum messages are in Local Folders, If you want them on the Outlook account, highlight each folder, select all, and then right click and select COPY to desired outlook folder. Check that all content is on the outlook account, as uploading to IMAP can be problematic
  7. once all the message folders have been copied to outlook and you've verified them, you can delete the local folder

As info, when I quit spectrum email, it's done; there's no going back. So I'm guessing that I should completely set up Outlook if that's where I'm going, and back up any emails from spectrum before I quit. But I could set up Outlook, and still keep Spectrum, couldn't I?

Yes, you can have an unlimited number of accounts at the same time.

Thanks again dave for all of your help. I'm going to take a little time to decide just how I proceed. As additional info, I made a call to Spectrum support last night, and put this issue to him. He checked everything he could check on his end, and everything was set correctly. He then had me send a test email to myself, and it came through OK on both the Spectrum mail website and Thunderbird. So his final comments were that everything was OK with Spectrum, and any issues had to be with Thunderbird. So my question now would be: can I uninstall, then reinstall Thunderbird without causing any more problems? And is it a simple procedure without losing anything? Thanks again.

Why would you do that? If everything is working, why redo it? Yes, it is a simple procedure.

BACKUP

  1. ensure thunderbird is not running
  2. enter %appdata% in search window on task bar and press Enter key
  3. this should open windows file explorer in Appdata\roaming folder
  4. highlight the Thunderbird folder and copy to external media

RESTORE

  1. ensure thunderbird is installed, run once, and NOT running
  2. enter %appdata% in search window on task bar and press Enter key
  3. delete the thunderbird folder
  4. you should be in Appdata\roaming folder , copy&paste the exported Thunderbird folder there.
  5. start thunderbird and all should be there

Well, maybe everything is not working. I'm still getting the message that it couldn't connect to mail.twc.com because it timed out. Not all the time, but enough to be annoying.

This may work (or may not), but worth a try:

  1. click to settings>general
  2. scroll to the bottom and, on the right, is 'config editor'. click that
  3. enter this: mailnews.tcptimeout
  4. I think you will see the default setting is 100. Change to 250 save and exit
  5. restart thunderbird and let me know. Also, recheck config editor to be sure your change took.

It had already been changed earlier to 300.
