Firefox crashes on startup

brownflat

Firefox keeps crashing/hanging on startup. Any other browser I use is fine. Been using Firefox for years and would like to keep using it. This has been going on since August, so I have not really been using it since then. Tried all the troubleshoot steps that Mozilla recommends but still crashing e.g reinstall, fresh install.

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. On the keyboard, press [Windows] Windows Key + [R]. This should bring up a Run box that contains a text field.
  2. In that text field, type %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
  3. From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
  4. Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
  5. Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
  6. Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.

Thanks in advance!

I tried to submit the latest crash report this morning but but it failed. These are the latest ones I have.

I see these crashes are from July pretty much, and all are graphics rendering related, mostly from GPU process or Direct3D crashing: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1804656

Can you make sure you have all system and driver updates applied?

Yes they are all from July as I have not been using Firefox since then because of the crashes. It also still crashed this morning but submitting a crash report failed. I will have a look at the driver updates. All other browsers work fine at this stage.

Just checked, all drivers are updated.

If you hold Shift key when launching Firefox to start into Troubleshoot Mode directly, does a) anything change about the stability, and b) would that allow accessing the crash logs?

Yes I have done that and it seems to work fine. I can see the the crash logs.
