The fonts section is just to the right of "Compatibility" in your screenshot. You can access it by clicking on the "F" (which is the "F" in "Fonts". You can also click the downwards arrow to the right of the "F" and select "Fonts".

You can do this for any text that is not displaying correctly to see what fonts are common among all the times when the text is not displaying correctly.

About setting a consistent font size for the text displayed on websites: You could go to Settings -> type “font” -> Advanced… specify a minimum font size (for example it is 16 in my screenshot) and uncheck the “Allow pages to choose their own fonts” -> OK.

If you view a website on Microsoft Edge, does it also have this font issue? I know you said it worked fine on Thunderbird, but I want to test another browser to make sure it is just Firefox.

sorry i just noticed the font is only good in some parts of TB.

just tryed edge/bing and its no better.

will examine that page for "font" toimorrolw if i can but i need a break from the eye strain for a day

thanks \again for sticking with my problem

guess this is what we're looking for . its an inspection of text in this reply box. the "font" menue was just of the screen thats why i coulnt find it before

does it throw any light on matters thanks

You said the font problem does not happen on every site. If you use the font inspector on text that is displaying correctly, you know that that font is probably not the issue. But if you use the font inspector on text that is displaying incorrectly, then there is be an issue with displaying that font. Have you noticed a common font that does not display properly?

When you have time, could you please try out the actions as said in these comments? The issue about jagged text seems to be the same as yours here, and if they worked for other people I believe they may help you out too.

I know that I'm providing a lot of information every time I get back to you, so don't worry about having to respond as fast as you can.

you say; " If you use the font inspector on text that is displaying correctly" , does thos mean its a tool that does somethuing or am i just missed it Lol

For the spell checker in Firefox if you do not have en-US or another of few language locales that comes with a dictionary then you may need to install a dictionary for the inline spell checker to use.

. thanks for the links , am looking at them now . i have just opoted out of performance and checked "let windows decide" in adjust the appearance and performance control. so far it seems to have fixed the weird font , altholugfh historicaly ive always chosen "performance"

thanx that did it the spell check now works here

hi Mark

you say; " If you use the font inspector on text that is displaying correctly" , does thos mean its a tool that does something to all font, not just whats being inspected, or am i just missed it. i see i can use it to ajust the font, but thats only for one page i think

thanks for the links, ive tryed several of the possible solutions but none worked, what did work well though was one offered solution : letting "windows chose" instead of "performance" which i normaly select does this help in determining whats wrong with it? , i'd stil like to fix it

apologies for the spelling , i still havent fixed spell checker as you type. thanks James, i do have the right dictonarys

thanks

Right, it works on a page by page basis. If you do right click on text -> Inspect -> go to Fonts, and look at the fonts in the list, you can make a conclusion on what fonts are working or not. Since you said that the font issue doesn't happen on all websites, I thought that your computer might have issues rendering specific fonts, because different websites use different fonts. When you still had the font issue, the idea was for you to inspect text that didn't display correctly. You could record the fonts do not work and put them in a list. Then, look at the list and see if there is something common with the fonts. But if "letting windows choose" is working, I don't think you need to do this.

Unfortunately, I don't know what to suggest beyond letting "windows chose" instead of "performance". You said that you normally select "performance", but have you noticed any things going wrong or your computer running slower as a result of this change? Otherwise, I'm not sure why you would need to choose "performance."

hi Mark thanks for explaining that.

letting "windows chose" hasnt made any noticeable difference to performamace but as its very old pc so i want every bit of speed i can get

remember when i did the following; " try going to about:config in a new tab, enter "gfx.font_rendering.cleartype_params.rendering_mode" as the preference, and set the value to 5." should i leave it as is or return it to what is was?

thanks

Yes, you should return it to what it was before. You can also revert any changes you made to the preferences "hardware acceleration" and "allow pages to choose their own fonts" since those didn't work.

will do that, do you know what the value was before i changed it to 5 thanks

I don't know what value it would be, but you can reset the preference change using the icon to the right of the pencil.

h

lol ive got less of a clue than you...better leave it. does it affect everything, there must be a default setting ?

According to https://www.lkhrs.com/blog/better-firefox-font-rendering-with-cleartype-on-windows/, the default setting would be -1, so you can change it to that (0 has the same effect).

But there should be a revert button on the very right as shown in my screenshot below:
