Draytek router crashes when using Firefox on Windows 11

Started using Netscape and been with Firefox ever since it started. For the last few months, I find that my Draytek 2866Lac router randomly crashes and resets itself when I am using Firefox. I cannot pin it down to opening any particular website but it seems to be related to opening a new tab / link. I have FF set to open new tab automatically and no extensions (other than British English) are in use. Using FF, I can seldom go more than 5 -6 hours between resets. Not using FF, I have now managed 2 days constant uptime on the router - which is a fantastic change! Is there something peculiar with my system and any ideas how I can get stability again please?

You should contact Draytek support about login issue with Firefox browser.

I also have a DrayTek 2866ACac and since 27 Feb with Firefox 135 and 136 resets have been occurring frequently, more than 30 since that date. None with Safari. Even when Firefox is open but being accessed, a reset can occur unexpectedly even when using the Terminal app or once with System Preferences. iMac with Monterey. Ticket raised with Draytek but no reply yet. The internet is managed by BT's DLM (dynamic line management) system and SYNC rate will be downgraded if mean time between DSL resets exceeds a certain value. I don't know what mechanism exists for the browser to reset the router. LDS

Thanks for the comments above.

As an update, I have been in contact with Draytek support and they suggested changing my "WAN connection detection" to "Ping Detect" from "Always On". I am using 8.8.8.8 for this. I am pleased to say that my router has not reset for 5 days despite extensive use of FF. FF has now updated to v136.

The 2866Lac is now running firmware v4.4.6_BT which Draytek suggested and they issued at the same time.

As to whether it was the connection detection or the router firmware that made the difference I have no idea.

However, I am no pleased to be able to use FF and browse without erratic resets.

For dew5: On the 2866ac "WAN connection detection" is normally PPP Detect. For Ping Detect, what primary/secondary IP addresses did you use? Then I will try the scheme Draytek suggested to you. Also: I would like Mozilla support to tell me what mechanism Firefox uses to reset the router and why ever it should do this? Most undesirable it seems to me. And when DrayTek replies to my ticket I would like to know why they take no action against LAN apps resetting the router. As part of my investigation I replaced the 2866ac with a Plusnet (my ISP) router which does not respond to Firefox resets and so further disruptions to the internet stopped. The Draytek <> Firefox link is vulnerable.

LDS - I am "blessed" with a noisy ADSL line that the Draytek continually "downgrades" for stability such that it ends up at about 10Mbps download. To avoid this downgrade, I use a Fritzbox as supplied by my ISP (zen.co.uk) to conenct to the internet. This conenction is very stable at 21Mbps and only resets when the FB updates itself.

I then use a CAT6 cable to connect to the WAN2 port of the 2866Lac and have the Draytek "run" my home network. This will explain why connection is not PPP Detect.

I am using 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as the primary and secondary IP addresses.

I am (still) pleased to say that the 2866 has not yet reset itself - a whole 8 days now! Still have no knowledge of why the combination of FF & 2866 would reset.

Hope the above clarifies soemthign for you!

Hi dew5: I changed to Ping Detect as you suggested and for several days all was well. But then FireFox+reboots re-occurred. Draytek replied and asked me to read the router's console logs. This URL may interest you: https://www.draytek.com/support/knowledge-base/7672 Unfortunately, the reboot immediately closes the link to the terminal app and so no console logs are available. I am waiting for the next step from Draytek. I can understand from your setup why PPP Detect is not appropriate. I have a VDSL line (Fibre to the cabinet FTTC) with a downsync usually about 73 Mbps. The ISP (Plusnet) DSL is taken direct from the master socket to the router. The house network is wired (from the router) including an AP903 but devices (iPad/iPhone) use 5G Wifi, of course. I monitor the state of the DSL connection by using a Raspberry Pi to connect to the router every 5 minutes and download VDSL status which gives all the information about the DSL connection which I then plot. (Have been doing this since 2016!) Current plan is to use Wireshark on the network to try and see what Firefox is doing. If I get any useful information from DrayTek I will let you know.

Morning LDS, many thanks for your information and the telnet link.

I too had just over a week of no resets until yesterday when I had about 6 in the space of an hour making use of FF unviable.

Changing back to just using Chrome means that I have now had the router stable for just over 15 hours.... A huge difference to previous when it would run for months between firmware upgrades! As before, my VDSL connection has been stable as the Fritz!Box logs so no interruptions.

I also have wired AP903s as access points, along with some 120 Wi-Fi devices each with a bound IP address - automation gone rampant....

I have sent my syslogs to Draytek and await their response. So far as I can see, there is nothing in these logs to say what is happening but I am by no means an expert in these areas! Will be interested to hear what Wireshark says - another system I have never got to grips with.

Thanks again for information.

Just to advise that Draytek have issued a firmware update v 4.4.6.1 which should address some WLAN issues. Have installed and will see how it works in due course.
