Yes, already read this KB but it's only relevant to issues if lightning actually loads up, which it doesn't with my issue.

Open the Add-ons Manager and check the list of installed add-ons. Is Lightning listed there? If so, what's the status (Enabled, Disabled)?

Can you explain that in more detail? What exactly happens with Lightning enabled?

Thunderbird doesn't load at all. You see nothing. Several thunderbird processes running away merrily in task manager but it never loads.

Start Windows in safe mode and see if TB performs properly. It's quite possible the problem is related to Avast, especially if it is scanning mail folders or secure (SSL) connections, for mail accounts and network calendars. Both options should be disabled.

Good idea but sadly it's made no difference. Thunderbird just chugs away in background without loading, even in Windows Safe Mode with Lightning Enabled.

Are there any log files to look at for lightning?

Yes, Thunderbird loads as it does in Windows normally but it won't load if the Lightning add-on is enabled even in Safe Mode.

After restarting Thunderbird, it will come up in normal mode, even though Lightning will probably still be disabled. Enable Lightning, and restart Thunderbird again.

It would certainly help if you'd tell which tasks you performed.

In case it wasn't obvious, the link given above did point you to one particular task: "Lightning disappears after a Thunderbird update"

Even if that may not sound like your particular problem, it essentially re-installs Lightning, which then may address your problem.

I did the solution under "Lightning disappears after a Thunderbird update (release and beta versions)" and "Lightning reappears after a Thunderbird update although I opted out (release and beta versions)" which are basically repeated in two of the other issues on that link.
