Can't set separate usernames for SMTP server, defaults to one username

I have multiple email accounts that use the same outgoing SMTP server. When I set the username in the Edit SMTP server form, that username is seen for all the other email accounts when I look at server settings for each email account. . It's as if it only allows one username for the SMTP server and has to apply to all accounts. Of course when I try to send email on an account when the SMTP username isn't matching, I get an error.

An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 5.1.0 <blankedout@something.net> sender rejected. AUP#O-1580. Please verify that your email address is correct in your account settings and try again.

Should Thunderbird allow the SMTP usernames to be different for each account?

Do you have one SMTP server configured for each mail account in the outgoing server (SMTP) entry. With unique and clearly identifiable names?

Good, now go the the incoming account information (above server settings) for each account and verify the outgoing server selected is the correct one.

There is no way to tell which is which if you have five outgong server gmails for instance. Include the user name in the description in outgoing server (SMTP)

I have a similar but far worse behaviour. I have Thunderbird version 60.5.3. I have 4 email accounts setup within Thunderbird.

I replied to an email today that was sitting in "Account A's" inbox, however it was sent to the recipient with "Account D's" email address. THIS IS VERY EMBARRASING.

When I review the settings: Tools->Account Settings->click on account A's title, then down in the bottom right, click on "Edit SMTP server", in the "Security and Authentication" section-> in the "User Name" box, I see Account D's email address.

That was the email address that the recipient must have gotten because when he replied to it, the email came into Account D's inbox instead of Account A's inbox.

Now, the first course of action was that I corrected the Username for Account A in the same textbox as above, but that username also gets propagated to Account D's User Name in the same textbox. So no matter what I do, I can't seem to get the correct Username to "stick". It's as if the underlying database that holds this config info is somehow using the same field for these 2 seperate email accounts. So, if I change one, the other gets changed as well to same thing.

This is an incredible breach of privacy. Please address this ASAP and push out a new release. I can't reliably use Thunderbird until this issue is fix.

I think I may have found a way to address this issue:

Problem: All 4 SMTP servers are the same and are all named the same in the "Manage Identities" area.

Potential Solution: On left side of the Account Settings form, scroll down to the bottom to the Outgoing Server (SMTP) entry and click on it. The Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings dialog window comes into view. There are 4 identical entries there. Proceed to "Edit" each "Google Mail - smtp.gmail.com" entry to add the description / additional comment to say which Email address that SMTP server is asssociated with / account it belongs to. Then go back and review the Outgoing Server (SMTP) setting for each account and select the right one for that account.

Man. This is nuts.

I apologise if I misunderstood the original support guy's comment on this whole thing. It seemed to suggest to take the actions I did in an attempt to address this issue, but was more vague in doing so.
