Tbird is 'not responding' now for up to 30 seconds. Is anyone trying to fix that?

Nothing to add; fixes for the widespread kerrnel secuirty issues have slowed everything down, but Tbird has slowed down, at random, much more.

I realised that Thunderbird has a 'safe mode' as well as Windows. The latter didn't help, but the former gave an instant solution! I found Lightning in the list of Problem Extensions. I don't recall how it got there, but removing it seems to have fixed the problem, not only for Thunderbird but other programs were sticking and that seems to have stopped.

I will investigate SUMO.

What is your anti-virus software?

I have AVG Internet Security, paid up and updated. I have asked AVG if they have any issues with Tbird and they say they have not.

Try to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled. - Win10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode

Does the problem go away?

I've been all through this before. It hasn't produced a solution. The problem seems much less frequent, but in any case the frequncy varies in normal operation from day to day anyway
