I haven't been able to install add-ons for Thunderbird for the last few weeks. I am running Thunderbird 45.3.0 on Ubuntu Mate 14.04. I did try the latest version of Thunderbird by downloading from the website, but I couldn't install add-ons on that either. I tried creating a new profile and that didn't help either. After I download an add-on, it is extracted in the staged folder under extensions in the profile folder. However, after I restart Thunderbird, the folder goes away. Here are the errors from the error console.

I haven't been able to install add-ons for Thunderbird for the last few weeks.

Please explain in detail the steps you do when downloading and installing an extension. Which one are you trying to install anyway?

I tried the following two methods.

Download the addon using a browser and from Thunderbird use the install from file option.

From within Thunderbird, I went to Add-ons->Get Add-ons->Search. Then Add to thunderbird for a selected add-on. Later it prompts me to restart, so I click on the option to restart.

I tried Lightning, Compact Header and Mail Redirect. Neither of them works. They all download and prompt me to restart thunderbird. But after restart, I don't see the add-on.

I was able to install AdblockPlus. so it looks like an add-on that doesn't require restart would install.

What version of Thunderbird are you using now? The vanilla one from the Mozilla website, or the one provided in the Ubuntu repository? In general, it's recommended not to mix up vanilla and repository versions when installing add-ons.

I am using the one from the Ubuntu repository. However, I did try the one from the Mozilla website. I created a different profile as well, to rule out any issues with my profile or database.

I am using the one from the Ubuntu repository

That means you'll also need to install Lightning via the Ubuntu repository.

After I installed Lightning from the Ubuntu repository, I still had to install it from within Thunderbird. But after that it installed fine and it does show up in my add-ons list. However, I am still not able to install other add-ons from Thunderbird.

After I installed Lightning from the Ubuntu repository, I still had to install it from within Thunderbird.

I don't understand that. Are you saying you installed Lightning twice?

Yes. After I installed from the Ubuntu repository, lightning didn't show up in Thunderbird add-ons. However, after that I also installed from within Thunderbird->add-ons. That's when lightning finally showed up in Thunderbird.

I'd suggest you ask in an Ubuntu forum. You're not supposed to install an add-on twice.
