I currently have Firefox 44.0.2. I don't want to update yet, because I use the Tab Groups feature, which will be discontinued if I update. Just a moment ago, whilst I was away form my desk, Firefox began to update automatically, without my permission! I interrupted the file download, and rebooted the computer, but it still says that it will update when Friefox is restarted. How can I stop Firefox from updating?

hi, the tab groups feature lives on in this addon: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/tab-groups-panorama/
This doesn't answer my question: I want to stop the update! How do I do this? Currently I have a window which says that the update will proceed if I restart Firefox. I always shut down the computer each day, often several times if I'm moving from place to place, so obviously next time I do this, Firefox will update. I don't want it to! There must be a a way to stop it surely?
It is possible to stop updates completing and to prevent updates. It is also easy to downgrade again.
Whilst recognising your right to do any of this we are reluctant to post the information openly, & without warnings, unless knowing the user has a good reason for needing to do this, because otherwise less knowledgeable users reading the thread may take this to be a recommended and safe action.
Using unsafe unsupported old versions increase risks to your data and System.
- See (do NOT) Install an older version of Firefox
Those taking such action may wish to consider mitigation strategies such as using a Virtual Machine or having a well rehearsed Bare Metal recovery procedure.
Moses has explained how you may update and continue to use the Tabs group feature, so that appears to be a suitable solution. Any particular reason why you do not wish to try that ?
