"Server timed out" immediately on 1st try sending email - but works every time on 2nd try

Ever since the last upgrade, when sending email, Thunderbird tells me - every time - instantly - my server timed out. But when I resend, it completes the task - instantly - every time. It's annoying but not soul-destroying. I have been using TB for years and have not changed anything at all - just did the update. Anyone know why?

nothing concrete I know of, but you might try disabling outgoing email scanning in your anti virus. Often a source of unexplained hiccups.
