Hi,

I have an email address with ntl business using thunderbird, which works fine at work but I cannot send messages when at home using my laptop. I can receive messages OK but cannot send them. The following message comes up :

'Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server smtp.ntlbusiness.com timed out. Try again or contact your network administrator'

I have screenshotted the error messages and my current account settings below. I have tried disabling my AVG but still no difference! Any help would be very much appreciated!

Cheers

Hi dbond34,

Most likely you have the name of the smtp server wrong: smtp.ntlbusiness.com Or you don't have the security settings correct.

Try taking a look at the account settings on your work computer and make sure you are using the same one's at home.

Let us know if that solves your problem. -Curtis

It's a bit hard to find specific information for your service, but I would try these settings:

outgoing smtp server: smtp.virginmediabusiness.co.uk port: 465 Connection security: SSL/TLS Authentication: normal password User name: your full email address

Hi everyone

Thanks to both of you for your help but same problem I'm afraid. Ive tried matching the exact server settings to my work account, and trying the settings as recommended by sfhowes but still the original error message, or sometimes this error message:

"An error occurred sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: aamtaout02-winn.ispmail.ntl.com connection refused from [84.13.179.3]."

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm thinking that it may be because my server (ntl business) is so outdated it's just not compatible in some way any more? To show you what I mean take a look at my old school webmail!

Cheers for your help again - massive reward from me if anybody fixes this (not cash though sorry)

So, you have an account that works at your office, but not at home. This can happen because the service provider at home doesn't allow connections to the office account, which is set up to run on the office network. In most cases, using the correct SSL settings will overcome this problem. But if not, try using the smtp server that works on your home network, and setting the office account to use that server by selecting it in the Outgoing Server (SMTP) server drop-down box, under Tools/Account Settings/officeaccount, in the lower-right pane.

At this point all I can suggest is that you play around with the security settings until you get a message to send.

Otherwise, if you have an IT person at work I would ask them; if not then contact your provider, you are paying for the service after all.

Hi OK guys/girls thanks for the info - will give it a go

Cheers again
